Why You Should Never Buy an Exactly "1.00 Carat" Diamond
Just 1 point lost can mean hundred thousand baht lost!
When buying a diamond for a wedding ring or as an investment, the most popular weight is 1 carat. Many people try to get exactly that — 1.00 carat — whether for aesthetic reasons, personal preference, or to save on budget, since even a single point increase can add several thousand baht to the price.
Diamond investors, however, tend to prefer buying 1.01 carats, or 2.01, 3.01 carats and above — keeping a few extra points as a buffer. The reason is that if a 1.00ct diamond is ever chipped — however unlikely — the diamond immediately drops into the 0.90–0.99 carat price bracket.
Just 1 point lost, from 1.00 ct. down to 0.99 ct., means a loss of hundreds of thousands of baht.
Diamonds are priced according to a standard market benchmark, with price-per-carat rates divided by weight range — for example: 0.90–0.99 ct., 1.00–1.49 ct., 1.50–1.99 ct., 2.00–2.99 ct. Prices increase with size.
To illustrate: a round 1.00 ct. diamond, D color (Naam 100 in Thai), IF clarity, has a pre-discount market price** of 646,000 THB. Meanwhile, a round 0.99 ct. diamond with the same color and clarity has a pre-discount market price** of 418,000 THB. If anything were to happen, that's 228,000 THB in value lost. This is also why the discount on a 1.00 ct. round diamond tends to be higher than on a 1.01 ct. or above — investors are simply willing to pay a little more in weight to protect against the risk of a price drop.
Some buyers take advantage of the lower per-carat price bracket to acquire a higher-spec diamond at a lower price — known as Premium Size — which is in fairly high demand in the market, so it pays to check prices and availability regularly.
